Ford Motor Co has been posting a lot of good news about their business lately, but a new development may bring something that is of a lot greater interest to consumers instead of just analysts of the economy. A newly engineered Ford Explorer sport utility vehicle is set to hit the market and it will feature some big changes that may shock some. The company is doing something that car industry experts are equating to asking the buyer to pay more for less. By going against the tradition of charging a great deal extra for more horse power, Ford is going to instead ask potential buyers of the 2011 explorer to pay a higher price for the smaller 4 cylinder engine that the vehicle will feature. These new Ford Explorers will be hitting the dealerships across the US in December of 2010 and they are going to include a standard issue engine that is a 3.5 liter V6 and features 290 horse power. That means it has more than the 4 cylinder Ford is set to offer. The concept is simple and sees Ford trying to convince consumers that if they splurge on the smaller engine they will be able to save money in the long run because this brand new 7 passenger SUV will feature the exact fuel economy of a Camry sedan from the Toyota Motor Company, a vehicle that gets 26 miles per gallon on the highway and 19 in the city.
This is a massive improvement that cuts miles per gallon by 30% compared to the 2010 edition of the Ford Explorer and should well entice drivers to consider the smaller, more expensive engine that experts say will pay for itself quite quickly.
