No More Military Sponsored Race Cars?

The US military spends tens of millions of dollars putting their ads everywhere from the radio to the sides of Nascar sponsored cars, but if Congresswoman Betty McCollum has it her way, military sponsorships will be a thing of the past. McCollum thinks that the military sponsoring Nascar is nothing more than wasteful spending, but the US military is really no different than any other branch of government as far as advertising goes. Politicians spend huge amounts of money on their campaigns and even the Social Security Administration advertises new services to disabled and retired citizens.

Nascar representatives are fighting back, and a spokeman for the organization, Ramsey Poston, recently told reporters that he was saddened by Congresswoman McCollum’s efforts. The fact of the matter is that Nascar fans overwhelming support the US military. Statistics show that nearly one out of every five people that participate in Nascar are current or former members of the US military. The fans, drivers and staff of Nascar have family and friends that will also go on to serve, which makes it a great platform for different branches of the armed services. Although McCollum is just trying to cut back on wasteful spending, it is becoming apparent that she didn’t do an adequate amount of homework when it comes to the military’s relationship with Nascar fans. In order for the US to continue to bolster itself as having the world’s most powerful military new recruits will need to sign up and complete basic training. It is strange that McCollum is not opposed to the military recruiting high school students as opposed to sponsoring race car drivers.
